Introduction of Water-Based Coating Technology: Forthing's Environmental Upgrad
Water-based coatings are a type of paint that uses water as a solvent and does not contain organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde, free TDI, or toxic heavy metals. These coatings are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and pose no harm to human health. After application, the coating layer exhibits a smooth, uniform finish with a rich, glossy, and flexible surface that is resistant to water, abrasion, aging, and yellowing. Furthermore, during the spraying process, harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are reduced by approximately 70% compared to traditional oil-based paints, making water-based coatings more environmentally sustainable.
Forthing, the rising Chinese independent Automotive brand with a fivefold increase in annual sales, has introduced a new water-based coating process at its newly completed manufacturing facility, which has an annual production capacity of 400,000 units. This new approach not only supports the national energy-saving and emissions-reduction policies but also enhances the sensory quality ofForthing products, giving them a finish comparable to that of joint venture brands. It is well known that many new automotive manufacturing plants in Europe and North America now employ water-based coating technologies. In Europe, over 70% of automotive coating lines use water-based paint, while the figure in the U.S. exceeds 60%. HowEVer, due to strict control over logistics, equipment, and operational environments, the proportion of water-based paints used in Chinese vehicle manufacturers is still relatively low, around 30%.Forthing, however, stands at the forefront of this trend, demonstrating a forward-thinking and innovative development approach. Its new production base is built to the highest standards of modernized, benchmark factories, achieving advanced levels in welding, stamping, painting, and assembly processes. Notably, the painting process incorporates a large volume of water-based coatings.
The stunning paint on Forthing's new vehicles is not just a single layer but four layers in total. These include an electrophoretic primer that prevents corrosion and rust, an intermediate coat to enhance the adhesion of color paint, a vibrant color coat, and a clear protective coat, with around 20 separate processes involved. The water-based, high-permeability, lead-free cathodic electrophoretic coating used by Forthing improves the corrosion resistance of the vehicle body and is more eco-friendly. Both the intermediate and color paints are water-based, while the clear coat uses high-solids coatings to reduce VOC emissions. Moreover, Forthing has adopted the advanced 3C1B process, eliminating the traditional drying step and reducing energy consumption by 15% to 20%, effectively cutting VOC emissions. Automated production lines, such as wall-mounted high-flow robots for spraying and robots for stone-chip protective coating, have further improved painting efficiency and contributed to additional reductions in VOC emissions.
The latest updates indicate that, thanks to its adoption of water-based coatings, laser welding, robotic stamping, and other advanced technologies, Forthing has entered the era of Quality 2.0. With its meticulous craftsmanship, Forthing is poised to offer consumers a new, high-quality driving experience that is both visually pleasing and environmentally conscious.
