On January 4, 2025, CCTV featured a special report highlighting that on November 24, 2024, the Qiankai Port in Peru—a key project of the high-quality co-construction of the "Belt and Road" Initiative between China and Peru—officially opened. Located on the Pacific coast of Peru, Qiankai Port is now a vital hub connecting the Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
Peru, a South American country bordering the Pacific Ocean, is approximately 17,000 kilometers away from China in a straight line. PrEViously, there were no direct shipping routes between China and Peru, and voyages had to detour through multiple countries, taking 40 to 50 days. The opening of Qiankai Port has not only enabled direct two-way navigation but also significantly reduced the shipping time.
On November 16, 2024, the port welcomed its first batch of 305 Vehicles manufactured in China, including 22 new energy vehicles. Wang Pei, the head of Dongfeng Motor's Peru branch, noted that the opening of Qiankai Port has greatly benefited local sales. Previously, shipping via the Callao Port took about 40 days, but with Qiankai Port, the journey is shortened by approximately 20%.
The official opening of Qiankai Port marks a significant milestone of the "Belt and Road" Initiative in Latin America. It will drive economic collaboration between China and Latin America to new heights and further consolidate China's influence in the global supply chain. This signifies an enhanced role for China in global trade discourse.
